Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about our fire resistant clothing by browsing our frequently asked questions below.

Does FR clothing actually work?

Flame resistant clothing works by resisting ignition and being self-extinguishing. Flame resistant material is, by definition, self-extinguishing material. Unlike conventional fabrics, it will not fuel a fire. Rather, it will starve a fire by preventing the entrance of oxygen through the material.

What clothing is flame resistant?

Nylon and polyester are both popular synthetic fibres that have fire resistant qualities. Plastic-based fibres (like nylon and polyester) tend to melt instead of burn, making them great for FR garment fabrics. These materials are popular in FR clothing due to their high melting points and low thermal conductivity. Manufacturers often treat these synthetic fibres with a fire-resistant chemical for additional protection.

What material is 100% fireproof?

There aren’t any materials that are fireproof, however, there are some fabrics that are more resistant to fire than others. Due to the structure of the fibre, cotton burns easily, whereas materials like wool resist flames. The tighter the fabric, the longer it will take to burn.

What fabric is most fire resistant?

Kevlar and Nomex are robust and heat-resistant aramid fibres. These fabrics are known for their uses in body armour and bulletproof vests. More than any other type of fabric, aramid material is the most fire-resistant and, therefore, the most common for safety apparel.
